Right now I'm working on glass garden flowers, I'll keep you posted. Last weekend my mom and I went to the incredible Brimfield MA antique show and camped out all weekend alongside our glittering glass booths. The show was huge! There were supposedly 6000 vendors and I believe it, I tried to see as much as I could but never made it more than a quarter mile before I turned back. What an fun event to go to, anyone who has never been before has to go at least once in their life. It happens three times a year with May being the largest of the three shows. Bring a backpack, a wagon or a pickup truck depending on your shopping habits!
Whats next? I'm enjoying a few wonderful weeks of free time to catch up and take a much needed break. I was at a show in Hampton Falls NH two weeks ago and went down early one morning to the beach and was reminded, I MUST live by the ocean someday! Does everyone have this weird draw to the sea, or is it just my Aquarius nature kicking in? Whatever it is, whenever I get a brief taste of the ocean it reinvigorates some deep desire to get back there. Once I make my millions... Here I was blinded by the sun, but still in early morning ocean bliss...

Here's to hoping for some dry days to get the garden planted and getting outside with the dopey dog. With all this rain at least I'll probably stay inside and actually get some work done.
Coming up I'll be in Meredith NH camping out with some craft show friends for the annual Castleberry Fair on Memorial Day, May 28, 29 and 30th. Then I'll be in Rutland VT at the hospital on the 9th of June as a featured artist, then in Glens Falls NY at the LARAC craft show on June 11th and 12th. Happy spring everyone, at least its not snowing:)Alexishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10479382443736950921noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1249576704192976443.post-9404446596684559472009-11-25T15:47:00.000-08:002010-01-31T15:51:55.194-08:00November Newsletter 2009
The holidays are here,

Can you believe it?! Since I was just toying around I didn't start with the basics of glass fusing, that would have been too easy! My first attempt is more of a intermediate level project for crafters who are already have a basic knowledge of fusing and the tools needed. Anyone, for a short time, can view the video here. Any comments and critiques are appreciated as I hope to do a full series of videos on a variety of projects. The more in depth videos are going to be for purchase so I'll be taking this one down soon. I hope to get some comments and ideas from all of you experts out there before I do though.

This is one of the many products that can be created with the finished tutorial.

I also whipped up a You Tube slide show to promote the site... This looks like a good way to get a little commercial for your products, website and etsy store!

Alexishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10479382443736950921noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1249576704192976443.post-33610343154705612782008-12-29T07:49:00.000-08:002008-12-30T10:48:48.420-08:00Fresh Start...

Its changing seasons and I'm changing direction. This year I hope to take more time to play and design with this kind of fusing. Glass casting is when you make an form or mold out of something like clay or wax. A common type of casting is called “lost wax casting” and involves carving a wax form. After you have a model out of clay or wax, you mix up a slurry of cement mold making product (there’s a number of different types) and pour over your original piece in a contained area. After the cement cures you dig out, or burn out your original clay or wax and, voila you have a mold that is (hopefully) an exact replica of your model. Different artists use different techniques but I would then take a mix of frit, which is finely crushed compatible glass, and fill your mold with it. This explanation is a bit pared down, (there are formula’s for exactly how much glass to use) I’ll be posting tutorials with pictures, information, links and necessary tools for all sorts of fusing projects in the future. So, to get back to the project, you fill your mold then fire oh-so slowly to a soak temperature of somewhere between 1500-1600 degrees and hold there for a specified amount of time. Firing schedules are really important and you’ll have to work out a different one for each piece as the size and shape of your finished product determine the time and temperature. After a long few days of cooling down, with proper annealing along the way, you will have your mysterious hunk of mold with who-knows-what locked inside. Now this is what you’ve been waiting for after days of this casting process, this is the fun part! You chisel and carefully break away the mold material and inside you’ll have this incredible treasure that should be an exact replica of your original clay or wax! Now, there are a lot of specifics in there that I left out but, as I said we’ll be doing real fully accessible tutorials coming soon so make sure to check back.

For now I'll be updating this and all of my online shops, so check back and see the progress as I get going here. This month I wanted to put the spotlight on a little place called Etsy. This is a great time to check out some amazing handmade arts and crafts online. Come away from your wood stoves and fireplaces, ignore that six feet of snow outside your door and if you haven’t already you must check out Etsy.com. It’s a great resource for artists and crafters of every kind to show and sell online in a fun community environment while buyers can see products from all over the world in one easy site. Every artist has their own store, you can shop locally by state or use the Geolocator to see the recently listed items from all over the globe. With fun functions like searching by color you’ll be able to find any item to match anything!

Brooklyn-based Etsy was conceived in 2005 by Rob Kalin, a painter, carpenter and photographer who was unimpressed with the current selection of online e-commerce and auction sites. Most of these websites were filled with overstock electronics and broken appliances. Interested in showcasing handcrafters and artists, Rob set out to unleash his vision on the web. Three months later Etsy was launched attracting 650,000 registered users, 60,000 of whom are individual artists selling more than 950,000 of their handmade creations.

I have been constantly updating and tending my little space on Etsy and wanted to share with you this great resource. You can find me at NovationGlass.etsy.com. And if you sign up for an account make sure to add me to your favorites so you can easily find the shop again.

A few of the items in the Etsy shop

Upcoming Show Schedule
Spring is right around the corner and I'm already getting ready to head out to shows.
